Downsizing and Decluttering
Sheri Here,
Well, I’ve run away from home, again. I’m on a (thinly disguised) research project in Palm Desert, close neighbor to Palm Springs. I am conducting an experiment based on reality: what would it look like if I moved to the desert?
Downsizing
I’ve lived within several miles of the Pacific Ocean for most of my life and have consistently refused to consider living in the desert as too hot and too different for me to think about, let alone be happy.
But I got a bug up my butt and I’m seriously researching it. I’ve looked at homes in places that are within financial reach and have begun to compare the desert lifestyle to my current home. I’ve discovered the location of my “must have” stores, like Trader Joe’s, CVS, and Nordstrom’s Rack. They are all here.
Oh my! For me, the vision, the dream that desert living evokes is one of a minimalist mindset: minimal furnishings, minimal clutter, and minimal clothes. Yikes, it is a long stretch from my current circumstances.
Decluttering
Yet decluttering becomes a necessity for me in every scenario I run of my future, at this time in my life. They all entail downsizing my life to embrace the concept of less stuff.
Now mind you, I’ve previously written that research is just another way to be distracted. See my blog Research is Another Form of Squirrel. And I’ve recently been accused of staying overly busy to avoid grieving the passing of my husband. It could be true.
The last several weeks, I’ve been actively beginning the process of downsizing, releasing things, stuff, and opening some more spaciousness in my life.
If my life is full, then the Universe has nowhere to put something new. Decluttering and downsizing are, for me, an emotional process. Everything I touch has history. As I am releasing things, it also entails grieving, so it has become part of the way I’m grieving George. OK, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
In the meantime, I’m doing research on what a different reality looks and feels like. It’s both exciting and fearful. But our body feels the same with either emotion. I’ve chosen the mindset that this is an exciting journey.
What About You?

What is going on in your life that you are actively researching and experimenting with? A new look on life?
Or are you in the middle of a transition from one place to another after you finished the exploratory stage?
What are you thinking in those deep recesses of your mind that might be exciting? It could be a grand adventure or seeking more information about a change you want to make.
