Sheri Here,
Yes, it’s been a while since I last wrote. At that time, I was planning to look at some houses in Palm Desert and try to figure out what living in the desert might look like.
Well, I did more than look, I wound up buying a lovely home in Indio, a close neighbor to Palm Desert.
Downsizing
I was looking to downsize the size of my house, but that didn’t happen. My new digs are slightly larger, all on one level, and with a great open floor plan.
But I did aggressively downsize and declutter my life, with at least half of all my possessions being released. I’m moving a little of my furniture. What I used to have was either sold or given away.
I decided I wanted to leave the past in the past. That meant furniture, files, collections, and memorabilia. Letting go of 50% of my stuff is serious downsizing.
I’ve been thinking about this for a long time, so I had already processed a great deal of the feelings associated with what I sold, gave away, or threw out. I don’t know about you, but I have a great attachment to my stuff, and I had to detach before I could physically release the things.
Support
That is not to say there wasn’t a great deal of emotion as I let go. I surrounded myself with a great deal of love and support on this journey, so when I was having a tough time, there was someone there to help me through the process.
In order to meet the terms of my house purchase contract, I had to have my home on the market within 15 days. The realtor I worked with on the sale wanted a “spacious, open feeling” in the rooms, which mean little to nothing, including furniture in each area.
It was a challenge – not only in letting go but in removing things, finding the people to help and the organizations to receive my things.
But…it got done with the help of my friends. The blessing here is that many other people benefitted from me releasing my stuff. The recipients were as happy with their new “stuff” as I was letting go of it.
I found I had missed practically nothing.
Moving
I’m excited about moving into my new home, which happens in less than a week. At this point, it is paperwork and time that need to be completed. I’ve been pacing around an almost empty house – this garage is filled with boxes. While I won’t say I’m bored or impatient, I am waiting in the hallway for a new door to open. It has been an interesting time becoming right-sized.
What about you? Have you been thinking of letting go of things or are you facing a move that requires downsizing? While you don’t have to move to downsize or declutter, you do need to identify what to release and whether to throw it away, give it away or what. It is a process.
